Password Construction guidelines

Strong passwords are long, the more characters you have the stronger the password. Passwords must consist of a minimum of 10 characters. In addition, we highly encourage the use of passphrases, i.e. passwords made up of at least three random words. Passphrases are both easy to remember and type, yet meet the strength requirements.

Poor, or weak, passwords have the following characteristics:
– Contain eight characters or less.
– Include your own name or account username.
– Contain personal information such as birthdates, addresses, phone numbers, or names of family members, pets and friends.
– Contain patterns such as aaabbb, qwerty, zyxwvuts, 111111 or 123321.
– Contain sequential numbers like ‘123’, ‘12345’, ‘123456’.
– Include the company name in part or in full
– Contain a common password such as iloveyou, password, admin, change, welcome
– Contain the month or year spelled out or in digits, especially if your chosen number corresponds to the current month or year.
